Wrong Town is my 5th book (depending on your definition of ‘book’) and my first foray into the world of fiction in about 15 years. Needless to say I was a bit nervous about making the leap from non-fiction to the thriller genre. But there was a little voice in the back of my head that prodded me along and I’m glad I listened.
Wrong Town was released to the public on Christmas Day 2015. My goal for January was modest – 100 eBooks. That was it. Thankfully the universe had different plans. Within a week or two the reviews started to accumulate and sales grew exponentially as the word spread. I ended up selling several thousand copies and Wrong Town hit the Amazon eBook Best Seller list in several thriller categories.
For more than a decade I have described myself as an educator who writes on the side with the goal of becoming a writer who teaches on the side. Thanks to your support, the scales are tipping in that direction pretty quickly. Thank you.
Questions and Answers
Here are my answers to the most common questions I’ve received since launching the Mark Landry series. Thank you for your patience. If you have other questions please feel free to email me and I’ll do my best to answer them.
Will Wrong Town ever be available in paperback?
Yes, very soon. Paperbacks are en route to Amazon fulfillments centers across the country. Once they are available I’ll announce it via my website and social networks. Stay tuned.
Can I get a signed copy?
Yes! And you don’t have to wait for the paperback version to be officially launched. You can order a personalized, signed first edition right now ($20 – shipping included). Please be sure to specify how you would like it personalized.
What about an audiobook version?
Yes! The audiobook is currently in production and should be available by mid-March. Due to the success of the eBook I had more than a dozen professional audiobook narrators audition for the job. I ended up hiring Steve Carlson – a fantastic storyteller and veteran of many audiobooks. The final cut will run approximately 12 hours and it’s been a lot of fun for me to hear someone else tell the story with such passion and intensity.
How long did it take you to write Wrong Town?
Just under a year. I write almost every day and do my best work very early in the morning when the rest of the world is still sleeping – 4:30am. It’s not as bad as it sounds and once the habit is formed you actually start to look forward to hearing the alarm and leap out of bed. Then I make coffee, stretch a little, and sit down at the computer where Mark, Luci, and Kenny are waiting patiently. Hanging out with them is a great way to start the day.
Where did the idea for the story come from?
I have no idea. Inspiration comes from lots of different directions for me and I never really know when it will strike. It can happen when I’m washing dishes, working out, or walking down my driveway to get the mail. When it hits I scratch down notes or record audio notes with my iPhone. Then later I try to make sense of them.
Is Mark Landry based on a real person?
People like the book for different reasons but a common thread from my readers is how realistic and believable Mark Landry is. This makes me smile because that was my intent from the beginning. The thriller genre is full of larger-than-life characters and I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel by introducing another. Mark is believable because he is a composite of real operators whom I’m lucky enough to know personally.
What are the chances of a Mark Landry movie?
I’ve had a few soft inquiries about movie rights but it’s still very early. I’m in no rush and movies take forever to develop anyway. That said, my gut tells me there’s a better-than-average chance we’ll one day see Mark on the silver screen.
Who are your favorite authors to read?
Probably the same as you. For example, I love the early Tom Clancy books (Patriot Games and Without Remorse are my favorites). Anything by Vince Flynn (R.I.P. – you are sorely missed, Vince.) Lee Child. Baldacci. Brad Thor. I’m currently reading Back Blast by Mark Greaney – it’s the 5th book in his Gray Man series.
When will the next Mark Landry novel be available?
I’m shooting for July 4th, 2016. When it launches it will be immediately available as an eBook, paperback, and audiobook.
I hope I answered questions to your satisfaction and I’ll do this again very soon. Thanks again for your interest and support. If you liked Wrong Town – please tell someone about it.
Gotta run – Mark, Luci, and Kenny are waiting for me and you won’t believe what they’re up to! – Randy
