Al Gore’s wallet vs. Developing Nations

As most of you probably know and, as Randall recently reminded me, Al Gore will be speaking at the Democratic National Convention. This reminded us of a post published when we first started TheCandidacy about Al Gore and his speaking fee. Do you think he gets the same fee for this event?

DR1 is reporting that Al Gore will NOT be speaking at the XVI Environmental Ministers Forum for Latin America and the Caribbean scheduled to be held at the end of the month in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (where I currently live and blog from).

Is seems that his requested fee of US$250,000 was a bit too steep for the developing nations that people like him claim to respect and support. I wonder if US$250,000 has always been his standard speaking fee or if he raised it after receiving his Academy Award and Nobel Prize?

I’m not against people making money, but isn’t US$250,000 a little excessive? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, the market will set the price. But, isn’t he the one who drones on endlessly about “moral courage”? Thank God the organizers of this even had the courage to say no instead of blowing their whole budget on somebody who is apparently concerned primarily with his own wallet. Do you think he and John Edwards go to the same barber?

  1. He needs $250K per speech to maintain his weight.

  2. I watched most of An Inconvenient Truth and liked it; Gore managed to keep it interesting and factual. But if he really claims to be an activist, he would be helping developing countries without requesting a paycheck at all, let alone such a steep one. I’m disappointed.

  3. Exactly. Imagine how many “carbon credits” they could buy with $250,000. Oh wait, doesn’t he get a piece of those too? (half-joking)

  4. I noticed this post on Digg and had to check it out … damn, that’s a lot of money! Isn’t Al Gore going to contaminate the environment with all that money he has to burn?

  5. Al Gore is a liar and he is scamming all who believe this global warming crap. None of those scientists who signed on with this stuff are involved with atmospheric physics, the Artic or the Anartic. They signed on for the money. Period. It is all a hoax. Nobody knows what causes the changes the occur from one century to another.

I do know this, the sun warms the globe so you can call this global warming!

  6. I see nothing wrong with making as much money as you can - democrat or republican. If no one paid that amount then he would either have to take less or stop speaking all together. The world is 100% run by money and either having it or not having it. Broken down to the bare elements that is what everything is all about - money. Sad but true.
So if you can get it there is nothing wrong in my opinion.
