Cheney and Putin: The Evil Twins of the Apocalypse

It was a dark and stormy night. Separated from their biological mother, twin boys make their way in the world. Both rise through government ranks of their chosen countries to fight the evil empires of the world, ultimately confronting each other.

Bad writing in that first paragraph would doom the rest of the book. It wouldn’t stand a chance of getting published. Yet, fact is stranger than fiction, and today we find the first paragraph is reality, played out on the world stage by those cherubic funny guys: the hilariously entertaining Vladimir Putin and his all-American double, Dick Cheney.

ROFL! LOL! It’s all I can do to hold my sides in! I can’t believe that many people in the world just don’t get their act. I can see Cheney and Putin at night on Skype laughing their collective asses off at the world taking them seriously!

It took me a while to “get” this myself. I always bought the act, until I asked myself the question “What would Cheney do in Georgia if he were the boss in Russia?” I suddenly realized that he would do exactly what Putin did!!! And, then…get this…I asked myself, “What would Putin do if he were the VP for Bush?” Guess what???? Yes! YES! He would “out” Valerie Plame, make Halliburton and his oil buds more important than Iraq, bomb the be-Jesus-Mary-and-Joseph out of any country he could sneer at, and even tell Patrick Lahey to go f*** himself!

Now here’s the problem I see going forward. Cheney will soon lose his VP slot, but Putin will still be in place constructing evil in the world.

Then I thought, that’s not going to happen. Just like Bill Clinton never went away, Dick Cheney is going to stick around. My guess? Putin will pull some strings. You heard it here first: Cheney vs. Hillary in 2012.

Today’s post was written by Randall’s father Dick Miller: Dick was raised a Republican, steered by good math grades and financial necessity to a career in engineering and high-tech software. He is now a born-again anthropologist/historian (it was always in him) and wants JFK (and Jackie) to return to the White House.

  1. The move to seal the deal to deploy the US missile defense system in Poland is sheer and utter insanity, premised on an absolutely non-existent understanding of Russian history. By having agreed to this treaty, the US also promises Poland that the US will manage these missile units, and that Americans will fight and die if Poland is attacked by anyone. It seems as though the US is hell-bent on goading Russia into a military confrontation, with Poland potentially being a convenient flashpoint.

  2. I have to agree with you here. If Russia were to set-up military bases and missile defense systems in Canada, Mexico and Cuba the U.S. would be screaming bloody murder. Then imagine if they supported the cause of the “reconquista” movements and called for parts of the U.S. to be returned to Mexico or, worse, given independence. Unfortunately, as Americans, we often see the world only through our own eyes.

  3. If anything you are incorrect. I would say that the Poland deal is a way to deter any future uprising in the region. right now Russia is “way over there” and they think action like they took in Georgia is ok and it would take a few days before the world could actually react and do anything, which is exactly what happened. Us having our base there, under the guise of a missile shield is not only brilliant, but it also potentially helps deter future aggressive action by anyone, including Russia. In the end no one wants a nuclear fight because everyone loses. You example of what if Russia did this is not relevant since they are not on the same technological level as us. You could easily say what if Republic of Gambia was to set up a base in Mexico, lol. It just is not going to happen. The delicate balance in the world might be predicated by our standing in the world and that might suck to a lot of people, but the end result is if we were not who we are, the world would be all fighting with each other and anarchy would rule. Long live the king, lol

  4. Sorry, my friend (to steal a phrase from one of the candidates), but I think you are incorrect.

I am fully aware of Russia’s power potential (basically regional unless they ever decided to go nuclear which is unlikely), and actually that kind of helps prove my point even more - a regional power of moderate military capabilities is feeling squeezed by the world’s only global super power. Why?

Because we promised the Russians in the 90’s that NATO would not expand into their periphery. It did and continues to grow. Then we reneged on signed treaties in regards to conventional troop levels in Europe.

    Why does this worry them?

Because in the 90’s NATO ceased being a defensive regime and went on the offensive when UN resolutions to take action in the former Yugoslavia were panned by the Chinese and Russians (kinda like how we veto anything directed at our allies like Israel.) Stopping ethnic cleansing is a good thing but bombing the hell out of the Balkans also had implications on the balance of power - it greatly undermined Russia’s influence in the region (just like the current scenario surrounding Kosovo’s independence.) We HAVE goaded and almost openly taunted Russia.

Leading the free world is a great idea, trying to rule it is another. Border disputes are not always our business or responsibility. Are we really prepared to give American lives for Poland/Georgia/Ukraine/Latvia??? Why not Gambia too?

I can’t say I blame the Russians for talking about an Asian military defense regime (Warsaw Pact part deux, anyone?) Attempting to balance the power is a no-brainer.

Those who have been crafting our foreign policy for some time think the world is our sand box to rule over. We have hundreds of active military posts in over 130 countries and then claim not to be an empire.

Don’t get confused and think I like it this way; I just recognize it for what it is and think they are doing exactly what we would do in the same situation.

The missile defense system is much more than a shield and not entirely defensive. Also, remember the asymmetrical power distribution you already mentioned? Should they just bow to the perceived “bully”? Would you? I doubt it.

I appreciate your perspective. I just think it simplifies a very complex reality.

  5. Hey! My post was about the clowns of the apocalypse — NOT Russia and the US! You can’t take countries seriously when the guys steering the ships are having so much fun themselves.

It’s never countries, folks — it’s PEOPLE who get to sit in the cockpit and play with the controls. We don’t say, “Hey, how about that Libya?” It was Ghaddafi! Likewise, “Hey, how about that Iran?”, etc., etc.

One event (an election, a bullet, a coup) and all bets are off.

Cheer up, mates! The world is only a heartbeat from destruction or salvation. Think positive…

  6. Isn’t it really that simple in the end? It is ALL about the deterrence from a nuclear war? Everything that is done is ultimately (either legitimately or under the guise of potential threat) for stopping the big mushroom clouds from rising into the skies. We all die, end of story, no winners or losers. Economic interests come and go and change with each year, decade and century. But in centuries of the past there was not the threat of world wide destruction that now exists due to technology that we have created. there was no bombs that could wipe out every living thing and make the remaining world uninhabitable. It just did not exist, but it does not. So ultimately it comes down to that. Are we the biggest, sure. Do we have “active military posts in over 130 countries and then claim not to be an empire” - yup. And you know what - I am happy that we do. Because each day our interests are what they are, we hopefully live another day a little bit safer from nuclear bombs killing us all.
And to dickmill - i’m not worried about the “clowns” you mention as long as our countries direction keeps it’s course. If we don’t do it……who will. We are closer to destruction then salvation, but I at least can sleep at night knowing that at least we are trying to make salvation a reality.
