I also knew Colonel Donovan from F Troop, 6th ACR at Fort Meade, Md. I was one of the clerks in the orderly room 1967-68, he was a leader who completely understood the value of Spree-D-Core, I can remember his getting permission for F Troop to wear a red bandana around our neck while on the parade field. He was a man that when you had contact with him you respected him and liked his personalty.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the note.

Harmon squeezed a lot of mileage out of that "losing your head" story - he started telling it in 1950 and never stopped. But never was it more appropriate than in the wake of the Panty Raid!

Thanks for the reference on the motto as well.

Randy - really enjoyed reading your book on my kindle. Thought you'd be interested in a couple of tidbits. On the NU motto: Gary Lord and I had tracked down its origins we;; before his article (see my NU book "By the Blood of Our Alumni, 1999). Also on the Great Panty Raid (end note on p. 397 of the same book): Ernie Harmon's "lose your head" story may well have orgininated as you say, but he told it to the entire Corps at 2nd Mess the day after the raid while "counseling" us on our behavior. I was a rook at the time. The Corps had received mass punishment (except the Zoobies of the Band naturally) before reveille that morning. A number of cadets, including some seniors, were booted out and many others pounded the pavement for many hours. A fun time was had by all. Congrats on your book and best wishes. Yours in the Corps, Bob Poirier '66

Great book. Very enjoyable read. It would have been nice if you would have mentioned the society numbers and their meanings though. For example....Night Riders 192, Skull and Swords 572, etc...

I just finished reading the book, and found it to be well written and informative. I would however, like to request more information on the history and specifics of the Junior Ring itself. There are many rumors and much mythology surrounding the ring (largest in the country, has been used to kill an enemy during combat, etc.) and I would love to know the truth behind them.

Hi Joe,

Norwich did relocate to Connecticut briefly in 1825, but when the town of Middleton refused to grand the land title, Alden Partridge marched everyone back to Norwich, Vermont. The land in Middleton eventually went to Wesleyan University.

*Norwich, Connecticut was incorporated in the late 1600s.

Thanks for stopping by. - Randy

During the Civil War Norwich relocated to Connecticutt for, I believe, two years before NU returned to Vermont. In fact, that resulted in the naming of Norwich, CN.

I love all these article and photos that you have posted. I'm a 2010 graduate. I would have to vote that Gen, Schneider will still be in office. I think after all he has done with the 2019 plan that it's his right to see it through. However, i would venture to say that it would either be his last year or maybe the year after. He's still a money machine, but like any good machine, it's eventually got to be replaced.

Hey Randy, saw your post on Twitter for this blog post. Wow, blast from the past! Thanks for the memory. And thanks for posting my article from the Guidon. Not sure I even have a copy around of that one.

What a strange time that was. In hindsight, for a new president looking over the landscape, this decision really was a no-brainer. Turns out is was a wise decision despite the reservations of many. Kinda wish I saved myself 4 years worth of bus trips but hey, it built character. VC was the kind of place that could grow on you as it did for me.

I remember you fielding questions from the Corps in the auditorium and some of the heated questions about the decision. How about offering your insight of that time and how you felt in your unique position when hearing complaints from Corps members? I'd be intrigued to read about it.

Thanks again for the post.

I knew Colonel Timothy H Donovan at Fort George G. Meade,MD when he was a Captain. He was my troop commander 1967-1968. This was F Troop 6th Amored Cavalry.

I looked up to him as 'the greatest' soldier I had ever met (and apparently I was right).

He seemed bored with this assignment and was eager to get back to Vietnam.

I can not explain how thrilled I was to finally find something about him. I had searched his name from the time I got on the internet.

Women in combat? Ask the squad saved under fire by the female medic, who just got the Silver Star. As far as I go, I have been on alot of CONOPS with females manning the turret guns or commanding the MRAPS and Hummers.

During rest halts, they joke and smoke like the rest of us, or water the dogs on the side of the road. On the move, they are fierce, pissed off, and willing to shoot anything that gets in our way.

Aside from that, when I see them hump 100 pounds of gear and heavy weapons up the side of a mountain, let them be 11Bs.

Are there women who can? Sure. Let them in I say. What about women dying in combat? It hurt me to see her go just as bad as the one next to her.

We see the news today that there are no more combat troops in Iraq, and women are not in combat in Afghanistan. In Iraq they man guns, turrets, towers, and gates. In Afghanistan, I saw several on gate duty. Outside the gate. They are the first to take a car bomb and the last to say they don't want to stand the post.

They are soldiers. Deal with it. Seperate quarters is a must, and that is the next challenge for the military which they are not taking into account in the DADT repeal. We have essentially when from two groups willing to engage in sex to three. Doesn't that mean seperate quarters? I think the studies ignore that fact. Do I oppose it? No. They are already there and dying. Fact.

Oh the memories. Unfortunately Randy the economic reasoning you just described is not just reflective of the local mom and pop shop in the DR, but also extends to the highest rungs of Dominican business. This restrictive supply, crappy quality and high prices hurt the Dominican consumer. The very best thing for the Dominican consumer/laborer would be for Walmart to open 20 supercenters and put most of those mafiosos out of business. ENFORCE COMPETITION AND FREE TRADE!

Why would you come back? I'm up to my eyeballs in capitalism and have had quite enough.... I wish I knew how to make chairs. Perhaps I'll learn.

Here's how I rationalize the "one star" reviewers.

CNN's home page has a "Quick Vote" which is usually responded to by 100,000+ people (you only need 500 or so to make it statistically significant if you have a random sample -- so 100,000+ just confirms the numbers more.)

For example, today's Quick Vote:
Do you think the pace of hiring is beginning to pick up?

No 51%
Yes 49%

Rather benign. But the true feelings of the folks becomes clear with sharper questions like (I made this up) "Do you think that every felony conviction should result in the execution of the convicted?"

I can almost guarantee that the distribution of answers to that question would be

No 92%
Yes 8%

It tells me that no matter how absurd a question may be (at least to 92% of us), there will be 8% who disagree (e.g. "Would you like to cut a finger off to see how it feels?" Yes 8%)

So, like 5% unemployment is "full employment", 92% agreement is "total agreement."

Don't be concerned with the 8% unless they show up with guns (which probably has a 92% probability, if they show up.)

You could maybe include any of the Jose Maria Cabral (young dominican director who mainly focuses his films about the realities in the DR, many times in a satirical fashion) shorts and/or documentaries. They are very creative, informative and pretty fun videos. Here's one of them called "espejitos por oro" relating to the conflict occuring now in Cotui with the Canadian gold-mining company, the Barrick Gold:

Agree with all your choices but I would add most other books by Julia Alvarez - especially her collection of essays, 'Something to Declare'. Also, 'Song of the Water Saints' by Nelly Rosario - magical realism/family saga. Have you read 'Dead Man in Paradise' by JB MacKinnon? It's one of my favourite books about the DR - travelogue, thriller, investigative journalism and history rolled into one.
