First Lady Laura Bush: Where is she?
This morning while browsing the news with the office TV on in the background, I was ambushed by a George Bush “news” conference (a true oxymoron.) Saying that he’s a poor speaker is a vast understatement; saying that he understands the subjects he’s trying to address is a whooping overstatement; but the bottom line – if you can find it – is the typical, “Times are tough; these are hard times; I know it; the ‘merican people know it; but everything is great!”
It’s gotten so old and so repetitive that I can’t even comment any more. If this were the old Gong Show, “W” would have been gonged before he got out the first “nuke-you-ler.” If this were Dancing with the Stars, Master P, Wayne Newton, and Penn Jillette would be offered roles with the Bolshoi Ballet by comparison. If this were America’s Got Talent, the woman who played polka songs on the banjo while riding a horse backwards would be in Carnegie Hall.
An interesting chain of TV events followed the “W” performance. Barack Obama gave a dynamic and thoughtful foreign policy speech. Predictably, it was a master oration in which you could actually understand the point. That was immediately followed by a John McCain “town hall” attempt at straight talk. I could imagine the Obama handlers waiting for the Bush conference to end and for the McCain people to wait for Obama to end before they put on their own acts. It was perfect for Obama – following the incoherent, out of touch president on one hand and then setting up the audience for a major snoozer from McCain.
Ted Sorensen was a “Counselor” to JFK throughout his political life (thus the name of his biographical book!
) He states in the preface that he wrote the book for 3 reasons (read the book for the first 2):
“Third, disillusioned American citizens today are filled with cynicism and mistrust about presidential politics…Perhaps it is worth reminding them that it is possible to have a president who is honest, idealistic, and devoted to the best values of this country.”
But do we have to WAIT for another half year??? Here’s my question of the day: Where’s Counselor Laura???
I’ve always thought that she was an educated, thoughtful, perceptive woman. Laura: Do you know who’s sleeping in your bed?
Hillary should have thrown Bill out for his philandering. But, LAURA! Your husband has destroyed our morale, our pocketbooks, our international standing, the lives of families, and a good part of the constitution! And…he thinks “everything is great!”
Throw the bum out!

That’s funny. I always thought she was a bit dimwitted herself. How else could you live with yourself while living with Doofus?
