McCain Does The Right Thing

McCain has finally stepped up to the plate. Last night:

He just snatched the microphone out the hands of a woman who began her question with, “I’m scared of Barack Obama… he’s an Arab terrorist…”

“No, no ma’am,” he interrupted. “He’s a decent family man with whom I happen to have some disagreements.”

Hopefully this marks a new effort by the McCain campaign to quell the potentially dangerous hatred coming from the GOP’s own campaign rallies. Some of it has been frightening.

(Hat-tip to Andrew Sullivan’s Daily Dish)

  1. This is actually very impressive. Obviously he wasn’t gonna agree with her, but he could have been much softer about the disagreement. I too hope this is a synecdoche for some greater shift.

  2. only stopped her because she had the microphone. I will be impressed if he stops and corrects people in the crowd yelling hate…

    He probably was actually pissed he had to say Barack wasn’t a terrorist… Wait, he didn’t actually say that?!?!?!? He just said he was a family man.

    Ehh dont really care. One more debate and lets get to the polls already.

    Porsche Man.. Where is my phone call?

  3. “Back” and “left” handed compliments, (pardon the pun) for a man that has done nothing but dedicate his life to his country.Where’s Barack when the hordes yell and party members call Palin a racist? Or even Bill Clinton? Where is the Microphone snatching then?

    Double standard, my friends, vote and support who you wish, but blindness should be reserved to lady justice, not partisan political “independents”

  4. This is the only blog I’ve ever seen where the word “synecdoche” was used. Maybe the site is becoming too elite? At least that kind of language will scare away the riff-raff.

    What say the owner of this eponymous site?

  5. dickmill:

    Should those of us who need a dictionary to double-check our faulty memories of rather obscure words (and not be entirely correct, but at least right on pronunciation) be considered riff-raff?

  6. Daniel,

    I had to look it up too. :)

    Welcome back.

  7. @Daniel

    No, Daniel — riff-raff wouldn’t take the trouble to look up a word.

    I was actually trying to stimulate a boring thread (on the eponymous blog-site of my son.) Thanks for responding!

    But — let me try to improve humanity with this suggestion. I don’t use a dictionary anymore. If you haven’t discovered it already, download (free) 1-click answers from http://www.answers.com/main/home_simple.jsp. Part of the product involves placing the cursor on any word on the screen and alt-clicking. Instantly you get a pop-up with correct spelling, definition, etc. I use it several times a day when I run across a word like amanuensis — download and alt-click on that word!

  8. And to think I thought “synecodoche” was some medical way of saying, “Douche-Bag”.

  9. @DJS,

    You made a funny!!! Very good! Glad to hear you are okay. Call coming later tonight.

    @Dick,

    You are getting way too high-tech. What about at night reading? I still keep a fairly large version of Websters in the nightstand. I find myself referring to it at least a few times a week.

    I don’t think we can consider a comment “elite” when it uses “synecdoche” in the same paragraph and thought as “gonna.”

    @RHM,

    What is your definition of “independent commentary?” I think I agree a bit with one of the other comments that you seem to becoming quite partisan in your thoughts?

    Lastly, does Andrew Sullivan know about your man-crush on him?

  10. @Porsche,

    An independent person views each and every situation without the pressure that comes with party affiliation. However, once you take a position – you’re coming down on somebody’s side of the fence. Lately, I’ve come down a lot more on the side of the Democrats (for the first time in my life). I wouldn’t read too much into it. As soon as this election is over I will turn my criticism to President Obama.

    When I see a word I need to look up at night, I DON’T reach for the clumsy, hernia-causing Webster’s; I reach for the Post-it Flag Highlighter (Oprah’s favorites — http://bigguylittleguy.com/2008/08/21/oprah-loves-the-3m-post-it-flag-highlighters.html) and look it up in the morning with 1-click answers.

    BTW — I referred Randy to Andrew Sullivan’s site. But — Randy can’t have a man crush — Andrew is already spoken for. And Maggy is better looking.

  12. @dick,

    You are a marketers best friend. Lot’s of product recommendations going on here. :-)
