When I see a word I need to look up at night, I DON’T reach for the clumsy, hernia-causing Webster’s; I reach for the Post-it Flag Highlighter (Oprah’s favorites — http://bigguylittleguy.com/2008/08/21/oprah-loves-the-3m-post-it-flag-highlighters.html) and look it up in the morning with 1-click answers.

BTW — I referred Randy to Andrew Sullivan’s site. But — Randy can’t have a man crush — Andrew is already spoken for. And Maggy is better looking.

An independent person views each and every situation without the pressure that comes with party affiliation. However, once you take a position – you’re coming down on somebody’s side of the fence. Lately, I’ve come down a lot more on the side of the Democrats (for the first time in my life). I wouldn’t read too much into it. As soon as this election is over I will turn my criticism to President Obama.

You are getting way too high-tech. What about at night reading? I still keep a fairly large version of Websters in the nightstand. I find myself referring to it at least a few times a week.

I don’t think we can consider a comment “elite” when it uses “synecdoche” in the same paragraph and thought as “gonna.”

What is your definition of “independent commentary?” I think I agree a bit with one of the other comments that you seem to becoming quite partisan in your thoughts?

I was actually trying to stimulate a boring thread (on the eponymous blog-site of my son.) Thanks for responding!

But — let me try to improve humanity with this suggestion. I don’t use a dictionary anymore. If you haven’t discovered it already, download (free) 1-click answers from http://www.answers.com/main/home_simple.jsp. Part of the product involves placing the cursor on any word on the screen and alt-clicking. Instantly you get a pop-up with correct spelling, definition, etc. I use it several times a day when I run across a word like amanuensis — download and alt-click on that word!

I had to look it up too.
