Oliver Stone is Planning a Film about George Bush.
According to The Daily Variety’s Michael Fleming, Oliver Stone is planning a film about George Bush.
During the interview, according to Fleming, “Stone declined to give his personal opinion of the president”.
“I can’t give you that, because the filmmaker has to hide in the work,” Stone said. “Here, I’m the referee, and I want a fair, true portrait of the man. How did Bush go from an alcoholic bum to the most powerful figure in the world? It’s like Frank Capra territory on one hand, but I’ll also cover the demons in his private life, his bouts with his dad and his conversion to Christianity, which explains a lot of where he is coming from. It includes his belief that God personally chose him to be president of the United States, and his coming into his own with the stunning, preemptive attack on Iraq. It will contain surprises for Bush supporters and his detractors.”
That’s declining to give a personal opinion of the president? Doesn’t that quote remove all doubt about his opinion of the president? Why even try to appear unbiased? Because most people believe anything they see in print and Hollywood rarely produces anything not tainted by political bias.

In politics it would be called “push polling.” In Hollywood it’s a “push interview.”

This will be interesting. No doubt that Mr. Stone is brilliant and that Platoon was a masterpiece. I had no personal insight into Mr. Stones political views until I watched Platoon with his personal commentary included. He is very left wing, not just on his view of the Vietnam war but in general. Considering his comments in the above article, I expect his movie will reflect these views. I hope he proves me wrong and takes a more neutral approach resulting in an accurate, informative movie that leaves the viewer educated and allows him to leave the theater with the ability to form his own opinion.
If he does inject his views into the movie, unfortunately, people will be swayed by what they have seen; especially considering the publics high regard for Mr. Stone as a film maker.

If past performance is a predictor of future behavior, the Stone film will be a hit piece.
But it could be worse. It could be from Michael Moore.
I expect the final product will make Leni Riefenstahl smile…

This is a bit off topic, I know, but I have to address the comment above:
Leni Riefenstahl was an artist and she did a lot of great work in her life. To discount what she did, you would have to discount the great Soviet works of the time as well; hell, you would have to discount any artistic work that was influenced or sponsored by any government or leadership of any time; any work that has content that we don’t personally agree with, or now see as being wrong.
Should we discount the artistic merits of The Birth of a Nation for example, simply due to its content? It was a cinematic breakthrough and it should be seen as such. You don’t have to agree with the ideology behind the film to appreciate the work that was done in putting it together.
Certainly that isn’t something that should be done. Much of the truly great art that we have in the world has been influenced by crazy personal ideas, influenced or commissioned by terrible leaders and events, and so on.
I should note that I don’t consider Oliver Stone’s work terribly important, though I do appreciate some of it. I was just making a general statement.

Probably be a pretty interesting movie IF they keep it real and factual. I imagine that all the Bush’s have enjoyed life, partied, had their share of women, been involved in many interesting business deals, owned professional sports teams, lived a real life fairytale life compared to most people AND had 2 people in the family be the President of the United States. If done honestly and accurately it could be very interesting regardless of which side of the political landscape you are on.
Unfortunately we all know that this will not happen and it will be a puff piece, even with Stone involved.
